If you already haven't already been sucked into the black hole that is Korean Dramas, first I might want to know if you're living under a rock because let's be honest you're missing out big time, and second there's no better time to catch up with all the trendy and hot K-dramas than 2021, come with me on a journey of fangirling and korean drama magic.
While there's always a starter pack of K-drama, this year's dramas could serve the purpose if you're looking for something new, whether you're looking for a good laugh, a good cry or even a jumpscare, the korean dramas on this list never disappoint.
crash landing on you
Yoon Se-ri is a successful business woman and CEO who owns her own makeup and clothes company that she built on her own without the help of her estranged rich family, and now her family's business considers her one of their top contenders to take over their company instead of her father's sons (do I smell extreme rich family drama), everything changes when one day she goes paragliding and ends up in the north korean border because of a storm where she meets a north korean soldier Captain Ri Jung Hyuk ( thank you storm!)
this korean drama can be considered a modern Romeo & Juliet for it tells a forbidden love story between the two protagonists and honesty I think I need to rewatch it ;) .
Itaewon Class
Park Sae-ro-yi is someone who always stands up for what's right, needless to say this gets him in a lot of trouble in a morally grey world with morally grey characters. But when his dad dies in a tragic car accident his life turns upside down after he winds up in jail, and that drives him to avenge the death of his father by creating the most successful food franchise.
This K-drama is definitely for you if you're young and with a dream, as things may always get challenging in life Itaewon class is a story about the power of resolution and the power of friendship and how challenges build character.
the world of the married
this korean drama follows the story of family doctor Ji Sun-Woo and her husband Lee Tae-Oh, she seems to have a perfect life, a successful career and a happy family, until she finds out that her husband is cheating on her and the people she used to trust lying to her, and everything goes grim when the couple gets involved in scandalous affairs that could destroy everything they built together ( I can smell something stinky here and you guessed it right it's a cheating husband and fake friends).
It's okay to not be okay
Moon kang-Tae is a busy health worker at a psychiatric ward taking care of also his older brother with autism , and has no time to find love, and yet with the magic of korean dramas he meets children's book author Ko Moon-young, who suffers from antisocial personality disorder. The story follows our two main leads as they work on their issues together and work through their traumas.
Mystic Pop-up Bar
Han Kang-bae encounters a mysterious outdoor drinking establishment that only opens at night. It's run by a woman named Wol-joo, with the help of former supernatural investigator Chief Gwi. Wol-joo decides to hire Kang-bae as a part-time employee. it takes time for Kang-bae to realize that the Ssanggab Cart Bar is actually where both the dead and alive gather, and they actually visit customers in their dreams to help resolve their problems.
Start-Up
Seo Dal-mi dreams of becoming the next Top CEO. She wants to take Sandbox (a fictional Silicon Valley of South Korea) by storm and become a CEO, and she believes she can do it with her pen pal and childhood sweetheart Nam Do-san, the founder of Samsan Tech. But what happens when she discovers he hasn't been the man she's been exchanging letters with all along? when she finds herself stuck in a love triangle what would be her choice (Our hearts with you Han Ji-pyeong, you're the first lead in my heart anyways).
Do Do Sol Sol La La Sol
This K-drama follows the story of Goo Ra Ra, a talented pianist who goes from being rich and living an extravagant life to rags in the blink of an eye after her father's bankruptcy and death. It doesn't help that she also got left at the altar. She ends up in the small city of Eunpo, searching for a social media user named “dodosolsollalasol,” who's been messaging her since she's gone through hard times. There she meets Sunwoo Jun in a small piano academy. Despite his seeming cold-heartedness, he decides to help her.
Tale of the Nine-Tailed
Lee Yeon is a gumiho (nine-tailed fox) who once sacrificed his life as a mountain god and guardian in order to protect the woman he once loved. Now he lives among humans, waiting for her reincarnation to reappear so he can protect her in this life and help her lead a longer life. He then meets Nam Ji-ah, a producer who's been seeking out supernatural stories ever since she was saved from a car accident with her parents. She sees the strange man from her who saved her as a child in CCTV footage of a recent wedding, and he looks exactly like Lee Yeon.
This supernatural story introduces in the process so many characters that you’ll definitely fall in love with.
Record of Youth
Sa Hye-jun is a popular part-time model who works hard to make it as an actor but is struggling to book gigs.while, fangirl An Jeong-ha aspires to become a makeup artist, though her mom would rather she worked a normal office job. Record of Youth follows the two as they go through the challenges and trials of trying to achieve their hopes and dreams in a world that seems to care more about money and connections. Until They eventually find their way together and root for each other through all the ups and downs.
When My Love Blooms
When my love blooms follows the story of Han Jae-hyun and Yoon Ji-soo who were once college sweethearts and now lead very different lives. He's now a successful businessman, while she's living a difficult life as a contract worker and a mother. Twenty years since they parted ways, they meet again and reignite their feelings for one another.
Hospital Playlist
Hospital Playlist tells the story of five doctors who all went to medical school together in 1999, and share a love for music. The show follows the friends as they go through the physical and emotional challenges of working in a hospital, dealing with patients, and living their own lives outside of work.
This korean drama brings you a good laugh with its funny moments, along with a good cry when it comes to these doctors dealing with tragic deaths every day.
To All the Guys Who Loved Me
Seo Hyun-Joo is the leader of a webcomic planning team, and she's solely focused on her career, with no plans of finding love or a partner anytime soon. But just as she declares she wants to remain single, two men confess their feelings for her. Hwang Ji-Woo the CEO of a pharmaceutical company, and popular webcomic writer Park Do-Gyeom—who grew up like brothers and are brothers-like, but now have to compete for their crush's affections.
Extracurricular
This korean drama follows the story of Oh Ji-soo, a quiet, straight-A student whose only goal is to be able to go to college. Because his dad's a gambler and his mom abandoned him, he provides for himself, and He runs an illegal side business—an app that sex workers can use to set up compensated dates. He comes close to earning enough for his college tuition, but things take a turn and his perfect plan goes to waste when his classmate Bae Gyuri finds out about his secret.
A story worth watching with how quickly it escalates and the suspense and drama it brings for the audience.
Memorist
The K-drama follows the story of Dong Baek, a detective with a unique ability to see all of a person's memories upon touching them. This skill definitely comes in handy when he has to help criminal profiler Han Sun-mi hunt down a serial killer . But as they chase down the killer, they both spiral while thinking about their own troubled traumatic pasts, and figuring out the answers to the string of killings their wanted serial killer left behind, becomes more complicated than they thought.
Hi Bye, Mama!
This Korean drama follows Cha Yu-ri died in a tragic accident five years ago, and now wanders the earth as a ghost who can’t find peace and is looking after her family. But one day, the deities suddenly decide to bring her back to life. Now, she has exactly 49 days to reclaim her place in her family, or else she'll be forced to move on from the earth and into the afterlife.
A heartbreaking story for a good cry.
